Wool Care

How do I care for wool garments day to day?

Wool is naturally stain-, odor-, and wrinkle-resistant, so it needs minimal upkeep.

Wrinkles: Hang the garment; wrinkles typically release within 24 hours

Between wearings: Brush with a lint brush and air out. There’s no need to clean after every wear

Can I machine wash my wool clothing or blankets?

It depends on the item. Check the care tag; some items are washable, others require dry cleaning only.

Washable wool garments (including Board and Lodge Shirts): These are pre-washed with a shrink-resistant finish. Follow the specific instructions on the garment tag.

Machine-washable wool blankets: Wash cold on the gentle cycle; hang dry.

Unless the label specifically says "washable", have your blanket or garment dry cleaned - even mild washing can cause 3-6 inches of shrinkage (increasing with repeated washings) and/or permanent stiffening and loss of the blanket or garment's soft feel and smooth appearance

How do I prevent moth damage?

Clothes moths are small, buff-colored insects that lay eggs in dark, undisturbed places; their larvae feed on wool. Moth damage most often occurs during storage or when garments go unworn for long periods. To help prevent it:

Brush blankets and actively worn wool clothing regularly with a lint or nylon-bristled clothes brush

Clean wool items before storing — soiled wool, including items with invisible body oils, attracts moths more easily

Store cleaned wool in an airtight bag or container

Use mothballs or crystals for the most effective protection; cedar and herbal products offer only limited effectiveness
